I still have not been able to get a working copy of linux. I think my .iso burner might be a little messed up because it has given me 2 bad boot discs. I found a fantastic tutorial on setting up a Fedora core 7 LAN server which i plan on following as soon as i get a working boot disc. I’ll have to update this post when i have more to report.

*EDIT*

I found another very good tutorial for ubuntu version 6.06 LTS server edition. i may try both versions.

Most of my time has been spent on researching networks, ports and IP’s. I decided to uninstall SUSE linux and replace it with Ubuntu server, however my ubuntu server disk seems to be corrupt and i havent had time to make a new one. The other servers do not want to recognize the ubuntu disk still so i am hoping that a new disk will solve that problem. If i can’t get linux installed on them, i will just use the two computers i already have. I think i am going to try to set up a LAN game (Starcraft?) and possibly a Teamspeak server. I need to learn more about public IP’s and port forwarding before i do that though.

I managed to install SUSE linux on an HP server and i installed Ubuntu on a HP desktop. I got the first one to connect to the internet but i haven’t tried the second one. I am having trouble getting all of the computers to boot from a disk. Sometimes using a diffrent distrobution of Linux will work and sometimes it won’t.

I chose to work on creating a linux server because i thought that it would be intersting to learn more about linux. I would like to learn more about linux because it is free and there will be a time in my life when i will not want to pay for computer software. During the course of this project, i would like to be able to set up a linux based server and perhaps host an online video game through a LAN network. If time permits i may also set up a few different versions of linux and set up a small network. When I started the project, I did know how to create a disk from a .iso disk image but not much else. Because everything in linux is done from the command line, i need to learn some of the basic commands to navigate the operating system. I did find this website with many different linux commands:
